A man was shot by Vegreville RCMP after a woman was stabbed in the town east of Edmonton.
Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after officers responded to a report of assault with a weapon around 10:22 p.m. Thursday and found a woman with critical stab wounds, said a Friday news release from RCMP.

A suspect was then found to have broken into a second home in the town about 100 kilometres east of Edmonton. When police arrived at that residence, a confrontation ensued, with officers firing their weapons, causing life-threatening injuries.

Police performed life-saving measures on both the suspect and the victim until emergency crews arrived.
The suspect was transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance, while the victim was transported to hospital and is listed in critical condition, said police.
A knife was seized as part of the investigation.
The director of law enforcement was notified and has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate. ASIRT investigates cases where people are killed or seriously injured during incidents with police, or when allegations of police misconduct are presented.
