Wind warning issued for five counties but mild spell due

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow wind warning for five counties on Wednesday.

The warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo will kick in at 8am and expire at 1pm, with the forecaster alerting the public of strong and gusty southwest winds with potential “wave overtopping”.

Status yellow warnings are issued when the weather “does not pose a threat to the general population but is potentially dangerous on a localised scale”.

Despite the warning and one or two cold nights ahead, there is a mild spell in store as daytime temperatures remain slightly above average for the time of year.

Tuesday evening will see temperatures fall to lows of 0C to 6C, with a dry and clear night in store.

On Wednesday morning, as the wind warning kicks in, the country will see cloud, wind and rain spread from the northwest across the island. However, temperatures will reach highs of 10C to 12C.

By Wednesday night, rain in the south and east will gradually clear to give clear spells overnight, with mostly dry conditions developing. It will be cold as temperatures fall to lows of -1C to 2C, bringing frost and ice.

It will be a similar situation on Thursday, with “patchy mist and drizzle” to start the day in parts but some dry spells will appear in other areas, Met Éireann said. It will be a milder day overall with highest temperatures of 10C to 12C. Thursday night will remain the same, with overnight temperatures of 9C to 11C.

It will also be cloudy on Thursday night, with more patchy rain and drizzle “feeding in from the west”.

Friday will see another “dull or overcast” day “with scattered outbreaks of rain, heaviest across the west and northwest”. Met Éireann is predicting it will be “mild and humid with highest temperatures of 11C to 13C”.
