The Met Office has warned that the UK could be hit with “disruptive” snow as temperatures are set to drop to -4C.

The forecaster has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice from Sunday until late on Monday as temperatures plummet.

The warning will come into place across northern Scotland from 12am on Sunday and from 3am on Monday for Northern Ireland. Both are set to remain until 11:59pm on Monday with travel disruption, power cuts and injuries from slippery falls possible.

In Scotland temperatures could plummet to -4C while snow showers may vary. Some parts may see 2-5cm of snow by the end of Sunday.

“Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services,” a Met Office warning says.

As a result of the ongoing icy conditions, the UK Health Security Agency has issued amber and yellow health weather alerts across England which warn of an increased risk of fatalities and other “significant impacts” across health and social care.

Snow could also fall further south by Wednesday as the cold air moves down from Scotland and the North of England.

How to drive safely when on the road in icy conditions

The Met Office says drivers can help keep themselves safer driving in icy conditions by keeping their speed down and looking “well ahead” for hazards.

Motorists can also stay safer by:

  • Accelerating, braking, steering and changing gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid
  • Using a higher gear may be more appropriate to help grip on packed ice
  • Using a higher gear helps manage engine power making it easier to find traction

ICYMI: Snow and ice warnings this weekend as Arctic air sees temperature plunge

The Met Office has warned that disruptive snow could blanket parts of Britain this weekend as it issues warnings for an “Arctic airmass” that will sweep across the country.

The forecaster said a northerly airflow will bring cold Arctic air from Sunday and into early next week, with snow showers focused across northern areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The yellow warning states up to 10cm of snow could fall in just a few hours on Monday alone, and it has the potential to disrupt travel, cause injuries on ice and power cuts.

Met says UK will get warmer by end of next week

Towards the end of the week, it’s likely there will likely be a transition back to less cold conditions as Atlantic systems start to arrive from the west, the Met says.

This will see a return to unsettled conditions with spells of rain and strong winds across all areas at times, forecasters say.

While the conditions should gradually turn milder, this transition brings the chance of further spells of snow.

Snow could spread south by Wednesday – Met Office

Snow could spread to southern parts of the UK by Wednesday, forecaster says.

“There are a couple of weather systems for Tuesday and Wednesday which we are keeping an eye on that bring the potential for disruptive snow for some regions,” Chris Bulmer, Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, said.

“Any weather systems that move across the country next week will bring mainly snowfall inland.

“Models are currently showing us a variety of options for both systems and we’ll be able to add more details to in the coming days.”
