Tottenham Hotspur’s six best January transfers of all time include 140 goal club legend

Tottenham Hotspur have had some phenomenal January signings, and they’re going to need a few more this season.

Ange Postecoglou has been struck hard with injuries in his Tottenham Hotspur camp in the 23/24 campaign. The likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have all spent long periods in the medical room.

They’re likely to dip into the January transfer market, much like Tottenham managers of the past have.

Which begs the question – who are the greatest January Tottenham signings of all time?

Lucas Moura

Lucas Moura signed for Tottenham Hotspur on January 31, 2018, when he swapped Paris for North London.

A tricky winger, Moura quickly made a name for himself for Spurs. His blistering pace on the right-hand side made him a firm fan favourite. His standout moment though had to be the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax.

Trailing 2-0 on aggregate, Moura produced a remarkable second-leg hat-trick, including a last-minute goal, to secure Tottenham’s place in the final. His electrifying performance in that comeback victory etched his name in Spurs’ history forever.

Jermaine Defoe

Jermain Defoe initially signed for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2004, from West Ham United. He also had multiple spells at Spurs, returning in 2009, once more in January.

Defoe was one of the most clinical strikers in Tottenham’s history, notching an impressive 140 goals in 361 games.

Memorable moments include his stunning solo goal against Newcastle United in 2004, a five-goal haul against Wigan Athletic in 2009, and a North London Derby winner against Arsenal in 2010.

Dele Alli

Dele Alli signed for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2015 from MK Dons. His breakout came in the 2015-2016 campaign, where he scored 10 goals and provided 9 assists, earning him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Notable moments include his stunning solo goal against Watford, his two goals against Chelsea ending their top-four hopes, and consistent performances in Tottenham’s run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2018-2019.

Sadly, it ended miserably for Alli, who was sold in 2022 permanently and now doesn’t get a sniff for Everton.

Michael Dawson

Michael Dawson signed for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2005, from Nottingham Forest. The English central defender quickly became a stalwart for Spurs during his nine-year tenure.

Known for his leadership qualities, commitment, and aerial prowess, Dawson played a key role in the team’s success.

A leader by example, one of Dawson’s standout moments was being a prominent figure in helping Tottenham qualify for the Champions League in the 2009-2010 season.

Wilson Palacios

Wilson Palacios signed for Tottenham in January 2009, transferring from Wigan Athletic for around £12 million.

The Honduran midfielder quickly became a key figure in Tottenham’s midfield during his time at the club. Palacios showcased his tenacity, work rate, and ability to break up opposition attacks.

His performances in big matches and his partnership with Luka Modric were pivotal. Underrated baller.

Dejan Kulusevski

Dejan Kulusevski is the only current Tottenham Hotspur player on this list.

He was initially a loan signing from Juventus back under the Antonio Conte reign in January 2023 and was made permanent under Ange Postecoglou the following summer.

The Swedish winger was instantly adored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and continues to be one of their star players.
