Consisted of as part of the Mardi Gras Festival this February will be a daybreak service at the Bondi Memorial committed to the victims and survivors of homophobic and transphobic violence in Sydney and New South Wales from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Provided by Bronte Surf Club, ACON, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and Waverley Council, the Marks Park Sunrise Service of Reflection will celebrate the past, review today, and look towards a future devoid of bigotry and bias.
Set up from 6:15 am to 7 am on Saturday 24 February in Marks Park, the free-to-attend occasion will be assisted by the concepts of remembrance, variety, addition, justice, and approval, states co-organiser Ivan Power from the Bronte Surf Club.
“Not many years back, a spectre of worry and intolerance throughout this neighborhood and lots of others reproduced sensations of hatred towards LGBTIQ individuals,” discusses Power. “This manifested itself not just in dreadful acts of violence and cruelty at Marks Park and numerous other locations throughout Sydney however in the dreadful action to this violence by our organizations and our neighborhood.
“We will collect at dawn to honor the suffering of individuals in our neighborhood and in other places, to commemorate the tremendous development we have actually made together towards a society led with regard, hope and love.”
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos, Justice John Sackar who led the Special Commission of Inquiry into LGBTIQ dislike criminal activities in NSW, and ACON CEO Nicolas Parkhill AM will speak at the occasion.
