Saskatoon flour mill fire caused by machine malfunction

Fire department investigators say the cause of a Jan. 12 fire at the flour mill on 33rd Street East was accidental and originated with a malfunction in a piece on machinery on the fourth floor.

The blaze spread through the mill process piping to the sixth floor, which sustained considerable damage, the fire department reported in a news release on Tuesday.

Total damages are still be assessed, but the fire investigator estimates the value at more than $5 million, the release said.

Flames were reported at P&H Milling around 9:30 a.m. Firefighters braved frigid temperatures hovering around -36C and brought the blaze under control by mid-afternoon.
