Among Ontario’s biggest geographical school boards, it extends around the City of Ottawa in a huge horseshoe to incorporate such distant towns as Pakenham, Smiths Falls, Gananoque, Brockville, Cornwall and Rockland. You ‘d be hard-pressed to discover a school board more driven by development than UCDSB. And it’s not the sort of fashionable, short lived modification that drives moms and dads and teachers nuts. It’s a deeply dedicated, sensible method to pedagogy motivated by what works best for kids.

The program is based upon executive superintendent Eric Hardie’s book, The Relevant Classroom: Six Steps to Foster Real-World LearningHardie argues that effective mentor and discovering start with jobs that link trainees to the “real life” beyond the class.

Led by director of education Ron Ferguson, Hardie, and a dedicated board of trustees, UCDSB teachers are trained in the Real-World Learning (RWL) method and supported by principals and a devoted assistance group to develop tasks that “begin with significance.” That equates into teaching the Ontario curriculum while doing significant deal with the neighborhood at big.

Grade 5 trainees at Pakenham Public School worked with High Lonesome Reserve to produce interactive instructional material for the path. They established QR codes on laser-cut plaques to offer details, and developed weather-proof shadow boxes to show 3D-printed artifacts such as a beaver skull.

What do such tasks involve the curriculum? Plenty. Hardie points out that Ontario’s Education Act specifies that the “function of education is to offer trainees with the chance to recognize their possible and establish into extremely knowledgeable, educated, caring people who contribute to their society.” That does not tend to occur in schools where instructors serve as “sage on the phase” and tired kids simply spit up material on tests.

Second, UCDSB instructors weave topics such as English, science and mathematics throughout. Grade 4 trainees at Almonte’s Naismith Memorial Public School created and constructed urgently required “story boxes” for aesthetically impaired trainees.
