Person jumps from balcony to escape flames in Lowertown blaze

One person had to jump from a fourth-storey balcony to escape heavy flames in an overnight fire in Lowertown on Saturday.

Ottawa Fire Services said it received a call around 3 a.m. reporting a fire in an apartment of a 30-plus-unit building in the 200 block of Clarence Street.

“Firefighters began a fast attack and advanced a hose line to the 4th floor while additional crews began searching the structure for any occupants,” the service posted on social media. “Firefighters extinguished the flames before they could spread past the apartment where the fire started.”

The two-alarm fire was contained around 3:30, the service added, and firefighters began ventilating the “large amount of smoke” that had accumulated in the building.

A total of 16 people were displaced by the fire.

An OC Transpo bus was sent to the scene to provide shelter to building residents.

Investigators were dispatched to determine the cause of the fire.
