Ottawa first responders rescue dog from Rideau River

Spokesperson Nick Defazio said the owners did the “exact right thing” by calling 911 and not attempting to rescue the dog on their own.

A German shepherd was pulled from the Rideau River on Wednesday afternoon by first responders after the dog fell through the ice.

A spokesperson for Ottawa Fire Services said the dog fell into the ice about 20 feet from shore near Crichton Street and St. Patrick Street around 11:45 a.m. The dog was trying to climb back onto an ice shelf when emergency crews arrived.

The fire department’s ice rescue team secured the dog shortly before noon.

There were no injuries reported.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick Defazio said the owners did the “exact right thing” by calling 911 and not attempting to rescue the dog on their own. He said dogs should be kept on leashes near waterways as the ice thins and melts.
