An overall of 9,222 defined structures were examined throughout the island in 2023, to guarantee conformity with fire-prevention policies.

This was revealed by Commissioner of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), Stewart Beckford, throughout an interview at the company’s head workplace in Kingston just recently.

He kept in mind that the variety of structures checked represented 1,427 or 18.3 percent more than in 2022.

The top-three classifications of structures examined were universities, commercial and business complexes and locations of amusement.

University represented 2,678 of the structures checked, an amount that consisted of 1,812 early-childhood organizations and 866 other schools.

Furthermore, 1,866 structures were licensed in 2015, which is 155 less than in 2022.

The Commissioner explained that there are different aspects that add to a structure not getting accreditation.

“In a lot of circumstances, a few of the aspects that we have actually kept in mind, having actually done an examination on a structure, [would be] lack of standard fire-safety devices such as extinguishers, smoke detector, lawn sprinkler and pull stations,” he stated.

The Commissioner even more motivated residents to connect to the JFB for “assistance”, to make sure that all the requirements remain in location to have their structures accredited.

Another crucial location for the JFB is its function in the approval of structure strategies.

“We got 882 structure strategies [in 2023]We authorized 602 of those and turned down 280,” stated Commissioner Beckford.
