NWS blackout: Only 7% of main area radars working over night
ST. LOUIS– Every kind of serious weather condition, consisting of storms previously today, depend on radar feeds from the National Weather Service. Significant blackouts in the early hours of Tuesday triggered a fantastic offer of issues for location meteorologists.

On a nationwide level, just 25% of radar websites were online.
The National Weather Service sent out the following declaration to WCIA’s sibling station FOX2 in St. Louis:
“The National Weather Service experienced a network failure that affected numerous projection workplaces throughout the nation over night. The blackout happened over 5 hours. Throughout this blackout, some caution services were affected. The NWS IT group reduced the concern by moving network services from our information center in College Park, Maryland, to Boulder, Colorado, and operations were back to typical since 6:30 a.m. EDT today; watches and cautions are heading out. We are dealing with the supplier to determine the origin of the failure.”
The NWS St. Louis and FOX 2 work hand in hand regularly throughout serious weather condition. Some operations moved to Kansas City, providing cautions from throughout the state.
At one point, those in Kansas City were hand-drawing maps to put in a chat page with FOX 2 meteorologists on where the cautions were, and the details was then passed on to the general public.
The reason for the failure stays unidentified.
