In the wake of such tough competition, the political drama ensued in the state just months before the polls. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Jharkhand’s former chief minister and JMM leader Hemant Soren in an alleged money-laundering investigation related to a land scam.

After his arrest on January 31, Soren resigned as the chief minister and has been lodged in the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi. Days later, JMM leader Champai Soren became the next chief minister of the state.
