Japan Airlines plane ‘carrying 300 passengers’ on fire after landing at Haneda airport

A fire has broken out at Tokyo’s international Haneda airport with passengers reportedly on board a plane.

Footage from broadcaster NHK shows flames bursting out of the windows of an aircraft while also spreading to the runway. Authorities reportedly said the plane could have collided with another aircraft after it landed.

A spokesperson for Japan Airlines said the JAL 516 aircraft flew from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido and was carrying more than 300 passengers. Reports said all 379 passengers and staff were evacuated from the plane.

NHK quoted JAL as saying it believed its plane was hit by another aircraft, possibly a Japan Coast Guard plane. Japan’s Coast Guard said it is checking reports about a collision between its aircraft and the JAL flight on fire.

It had no further details. Haneda is one of the busiest airports in Japan, and many people travel over the New Year holidays.
