How UK-Based Nigerian Researcher Develops AI Tool for Identifying Bandits

UK-based Nigerian researcher, Yunusa Jibrin, has invented an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that could revolutionize the fight against terrorism in Nigeria. This AI tool has the potential to identify bandits and their hideouts, offering a new direction in the battle against insecurity that has plagued the country for over a decade.

Yunusa Jibrin, a Master’s degree graduate in computer science from the University of Sussex, has leveraged AI-driven image synthesis to create a tool that can generate thousands of visual representations of bandits in desert environments.

These images, complete with weapons and vehicles, are then analyzed by a Vision Transformer (VT) model to discern terrorist elements with remarkable accuracy.

Jibrin is seeking a collaboration with the government

Jibrin, who hails from Gombe State, is seeking collaboration with the federal government to implement this technology in the fight against banditry. He believes that if his findings are adopted, they could significantly direct the efforts of the military towards identifying and eliminating bandits wherever they may be hiding in Nigeria.

Leading a team of researchers from the Federal College of Education (Technical) Potiskum, Jibrin emphasizes the need for a technology-backed approach to warfare against terrorist elements in Nigeria. He is determined to partner with the government to address the insecurity that is hindering the country’s development.

What to note

Efforts are underway to formalize Jibrin’s findings, with plans to publish and integrate the developed algorithms into the operational frameworks of the Nigerian government. This AI tool represents a promising advancement in the fight against banditry, offering a glimpse of hope for peace and security in Nigeria.

The development of this AI tool by Yunusa Jibrin is a significant step towards leveraging technology in the battle against terrorism in Nigeria.
