The eastern section of the Church Corner landfill in Morant Bay, St. Thomas is about 90 per cent contained.

Assistant Superintendent with the Jamaica Fire Brigade Desmond Morris say firefighters are working to contain pockets of fire on the western end of the dump.

Assistant Superintendent Morris says two units, one from Morant Bay and Yallahs, are still at the scene.

“We have received much needed assistance from both NWC and National Works Agency. For that, we are appreciative. The Jamaica Fire Brigade will continue to work assidiously to ensure the safety of residents in and around the area,” he pledged.

Assistant Superintendent Morris said the fire, which started Sunday afternoon, was able to spread rapidly due to strong winds.

Twenty-nine firefighters from the Morant Bay and Yallahs fire stations are battling the blaze.
