Erik ten Hag’s top five Manchester United signings include 2 players who didn’t cost a penny

Erik ten Hag has made 16 signings in his short tenure at Manchester United.

Since his arrival, the Dutchman has certainly made an impression at Old Trafford. In his first season with the Red Devils, he massively exceeded expectations.

He led Manchester United to a Champions League place, an FA Cup Final and a Carabao Cup trophy. This season he’s struggled a little more, but United remain firmly behind the man at the helm.

He couldn’t have achieved what he’s done so far without a few of the signings he’s picked up along the way, so with this – here are Erik ten Hag‘s top five signings as Manchester United manager.

5: Jonny Evans

Manchester United and football fans alike were baffled when Jonny Evans returned to Old Trafford following an eight-year hiatus.

Following Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League, Evans was subsequently released but joined back up with the Red Devils on a one-year contract.

So far this season, the Northern Irish veteran has been seriously needed and when called upon has been excellent. His wealth of experience has been vitally important for Manchester United’s brilliant defensive record. Well in, Jonny.

4: Rasmus Hojlund

Although he hasn’t hit the ground running in the Premier League, Rasmus Hojlund possesses immense raw talent, and he will succeed at Manchester United.

The Danish forward has shown what he’s capable of in the Champions League, with his five goals in the competition being the only saving grace in United’s abysmal European campaign.

He has bags of potential and at just 20 years old will only get better. Decent signing.

3: Casemiro

Finding a spot on the podium has to be Casemiro. The footballing world was stunned to find out the five-time Champions League winner was swapping Madrid for Manchester, and he made an immediate impact.

He simply transformed the Red Devils midfield last season and was a huge catalyst in their early successes. His performances in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup showed he took to the English game like a duck to water.

He would be higher, but he’s had an undeniable fall-off this season. Nevertheless, Casemiro still is one of Ten Hag’s finer purchases.

2: Christian Eriksen

Just missing out on the top spot, is a man that didn’t cost a penny for the Red Devils – it’s Christian Eriksen.

After his miraculous return to the Premier League with Brentford, Eriksen swapped the Bees for the Red Devils in the summer of 2022 and made the move to Old Trafford.

All we can say is what an inspired signing. Eriksen was exactly what was needed at United. A dead-ball specialist, with playmaking instincts and one of the best passers the Premier League has ever seen, Eriksen will go down as a great United signing.

1: Lisandro Martinez

But he isn’t the best, the top signing under Erik ten Hag has to be ‘The Butcher’ – Lisandro Martinez.

The tenacious Argentine defender was scrutinized heavily upon his arrival at Old Trafford. He was deemed as a centre-half far too small to face the trials and tribulations of the Premier League, but how wrong they were.

Martinez was immense for United in his first season and cemented himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest centre-backs. Despite an injury this season, he’s by far the best investment Ten Hag has made at Manchester United so far.
