City of Ottawa plaza flags to be at half-mast Sunday to honour late Brian McGarry

Flags on Marion Dewar Plaza at Ottawa City Hall will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Sunday in honour of the late Brian McGarry.

The well-known Ottawa businessman and philanthropist died Jan. 27.

Born in Wakefield, Que., in 1943, McGarry began a career in funeral services industry under Charles Hulse and Keith Playfair in 1962.

He went on to lead the business, now known as Hulse, Playfair & McGarry Funeral Homes.

McGarry also had a political side, serving on what was then the Ottawa Board of Education from 1985 to 1994 and as a councillor representing Capital ward on the former Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton.

He was a well-known philanthropist, both on his own and through his membership in Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, part of the global volunteer organization that supports the well-being of children.

McGarry was also one of the original supporters of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club in the early 1990s.

His funeral service is scheduled for Sunday.
