As part of its Disney shareholder meeting today, Disney chief Bob Iger made a surprise announcement – a sequel to the company’s hit 2016 animated film “Moana” is not only in the works, but is coming this Fall.

Disney also premiered the first official photo and logo teaser which you can see below. Iger says the project was originally planned as a TV series, but early on the company opted to retool it and produce a second film.

The film takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.

The new movie will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina (Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning). It’s not clear what cast will return from the first film.

The original film was a major box office success for Disney, making over $680 million at the box office and still sits regularly very high on streaming charts. It crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ last year.

The project is separate from the live-action adaptation in the works which will see Dwayne Johnson reprise his role of the God Maui.
