Saskatoon Blades knock off Medicine Hat Tigers in battle for WHL Eastern Conference supremacy

The Saskatoon Blades broke a 2-2 deadlock with three unanswered goals in a 5-2 victory Friday over the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-2.

It was the ninth straight victory on home ice for the Blades, who improved their record to 20-1-1-0 at SaskTel Centre this season and 35-9-2-3 overall.

Saskatoon remains in first place overall in the Western Hockey League standings and moved further ahead of the Tigers in the WHL’s Eastern Conference with a 13-point advantage.

Saskatoon, which led 3-2 after two periods, outshot Medicine Hat 28-18.

Austin Elliott made 16 saves for the win before a crowd announced at 6,385.

SILKY MITT-EN’S TWO GOALS

A pair of NHL prospects — Anaheim Ducks draft pick Egor Sidorov and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Fraser Minten — tallied two goals apiece in the win.

Minten, who was captain of Canada’s world junior squad, now has 14 goals and 31 points in 30 games this season. Sidorov’s three-point effort extends his point streak to four games with four goals and nine points through that stretch. He now has 39 goals and 27 assists for 66 points in 47 games this season.

Trevor Wong recorded a goal and an assist, giving him 13 goals and 76 points in 49 games. The 20-year-old centre leads the WHL with 63 assists and leads the Blades in points.

The Blades were good on one of four power play chances. The Tigers capitalized on their lone man-advantage.

HOMESTAND CONTINUES

Saskatoon continues its seven-game homestand when the Blades welcome the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday afternoon.

Game-time is 4 p.m. at SaskTel Centre.

The Blades will wrap up their longest homestand of the season with games Tuesday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Friday against the rival Prince Albert Raiders. Game-time is 7 p.m. both nights.
