An integrated wearable and wireless ultrasound device enables the continuous monitoring of physiological information from tissues in moving individuals.
Discerning human physiology with wireless and wearable ultrasound devices is an emerging field1,2,3,4,5,6. However, accurate data acquisition and continuous monitoring of physiological signals are limited by movement. In Nature Biotechnology, Sheng Xu and co-authors report a wearable ultrasound patch that wirelessly transmits physiological data and tracks moving tissue targets via a machine-learning algorithm7. Ultrasound data collected in this manner are promising for gauging physiological reserve (the capacity for an organ within the body to withstand challenges while maintaining normal function). Observing and measuring ultrasonographic responses to hemodynamic stresses over time, while the individual performs activities of daily living or exercises, offers diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic insights when applied to a range of medical scenarios.
