OTD: Rohit Sharma joins Mumbai Indians

On this day in 2011, Rohit Sharma began his love affair with Mumbai Indians as he was purchased by the franchise in the mega auction.

Rohit Sharma was purchased by Mumbai Indians in the 2011 IPL auction for a huge $2 million, which was around INR 9 crore at the time.

Rohit took control of the captaincy from Ricky Ponting mid-season in 2013. His management rapidly turned the fortunes of the group around.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, MI won the Indian Premier League 5 times – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

This makes him among the most effective captains in IPL history, along with MS Dhoni.

Rohit is the leading run-getter for MI, with an overall of 5314 perform at approximately 29.52 and a strike rate of 129.76, consisting of one century and 35 half-centuries.

In December 2023, it was revealed that Hardik Pandya would take control of as captain for the 2024 season, ending Rohit’s effective 10-year reign as the leader of MI.

Rohit’s tradition will stay unequaled at MI and in the IPL.
