January 05, (THEWILL) – Everton striker, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, was shown a controversial red card during Thursday’s 0-0 FA Cup third round draw with Crystal Palace. He now faces a three-match ban for a sliding studs-up challenge on Nathaniel Clyne, which was reviewed by VAR.
Initially, referee Chris Kavanagh did not even award a foul. However, after consulting the pitchside monitor on advice from VAR Craig Pawson, he deemed the tackle worthy of a straight red card – the first dismissal of Calvert-Lewin’s career.
The decision prompted widespread criticism. An Everton statement confirmed: “Everton have today notified the FA of their decision to appeal against the red card issued to Dominic Calvert-Lewin.”
Manager Sean Dyche said he “remained a fan” of VAR technology but admitted the lengthy review process was “beginning to test my patience”. Neither manager would have chosen an unwanted replay.
With injuries easing, Palace earned a vital 3-1 win over Brentford last time out, lifting them six points clear of the drop zone. Everton still remain just 1 point above 18th placed Luton after their 10-point deduction.
