Andy’s Valleyview IGA grocery store on 142 Street will be closing its doors for good as its owner Andy Taschuk gets set to retire after decades of ownership.

The locally-owned grocer maintained a strong customer base among the nearby Crestwood and Parkview communities with a reputation for having a wide selection and a community grocer feel. With nearly 800 reviews on Google and an overall rating of 4.4, Andy’s IGA struck a chord with many of its customers who may be sad to see the last standing IGA in the city close.

It’s like walking into a family farmers market. Really comforting and inviting,” said one reviewer.

The store’s reputation attracts customers from outside the area too, who often cite its nostalgic family atmosphere or its selection, which accommodates a variety of dietary needs.

The best selection of kosher foods in the city. Always a great supporter of the Jewish community,” wrote another reviewer.

Several reviewers referenced the kosher selection and the “old-school” feeling of the location.

The store hasn’t confirmed its final closing date yet, but the location’s successor has been chosen.

Ben Cochrane, CEO of L’OCA Quality Market, confirmed that L’OCA’s second store would be moving into the 142 Street IGA location by late this year or early next.

“A lot of the management team (of L’OCA) — we’ve lived in the west end. We’re big fans of Andy’s,” Cochrane said.

L’OCA opens its inaugural store on Baseline Road in Sherwood Park next Friday.

Cochrane said that the group was looking forward to extending the life of Andy’s IGA with the new location.

“We’re just trying to build on 60 years of legacy that Andy Taschuk and his family has built,” he said, adding “we’re kind of standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Cochrane said the group isn’t planning on making any big changes to the west end location once it opens. Looking to add their “L’OCA touch” and some of their brands, he said the group wants to bring something new and exciting to the area.

“We’re just excited that Andy trusts us with that location, and excited to be coming to our second location in the west end.”

As L’OCA prepares to open its first store in the next few days, Cochrane said the group will be doing everything it can to get the second location up and running as soon as possible.
