Met Gala 2024: Nicole Kidman Turns Back Time in 1950s-Inspired Balenciaga Gown

Nicole Kidman Turned back the clock in her Balenciaga take a look at the Met Gala.

Created by imaginative director Demna Gvasalia, the Oscar-winning star marched in a 1950s-inspired white double silk bustier and flared skirt over torn layers of black silk organza to simulate plumes. The initial dress was motivated by the ruffled gowns used by flamenco dancers, a nod to Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage.

“It was based upon a gown in 1951 by Balenciaga at that time by Cristóbal,” Kidman informed La Anthony on the red carpet. “It was something that I saw in [a Richard] Avedon picture[ofDorianLeighfrom[ofDorianLeighfromHarper’s Bazaar]I asked Demna if he wanted to reinterpret it. He reinterpreted it in the vein of the sleeping appeals and the dress, bringing them back to life. I consider this to be a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ brought back to life. It’s an honor to be able to bring it back to life.”

Styled by Jason Bolden, Kidman completed her ’50s-inspired appearance with Harry Winston cluster diamond earrings with around 15 carats and the jewelry expert’s Secret Combination 6-karat diamond bracelet, both embeded in platinum.

According to StyleKidman’s dress needed 800 hours of embroidery to use the 3,000 organza plumes, and an extra 400 hours to develop the white corset and silk skirt pieces.

At last year’s Karl Lagerfeld-focused fundraising eventKidman admired her renowned Chanel N ° 5 fragrance project in a custom-made dress by the Parisian style home decorated with 250 pink plumes and over 3,000 silver crystals and sequins.

This year’s gown code, “The Garden of Time,” takes its hint from the 1962 narrative of the exact same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails perfectly with the current Metropolitan Museum of ArtOutfit Institute exhibit,Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashionwhich opens to the general public on Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated program highlights vulnerable pieces from the institute’s archives, all seen through a lens of nature. The display’s coffee table book will be launched on June 18.
