Windsor Regional Hospital has hired more than 250 nurses through a provincially funded initiative offering candidates $25,000 sign-up bonuses.

The Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN) was launched in June 2022 to address nursing shortages in Ontario. Qualified nursing staff receive $25,000 for signing up and agreeing to serve at least two years in a designated community.

Most nurses recruited through the program will stay beyond their two-year requirement, said Karen Riddell, Windsor Regional Hospital’s chief operating officer and chief nursing executive.

“We have been looking at that because we have a number of nurses now who are coming up to the end of their two-year commitment,” said Riddell. “We are happy to report that we have had no indication that any of them are leaving the organization.

“They all reported that they are happy in their roles and have no plans to leave. So it looks like things are going well.”

Riddell gave an update on the program Thursday night during Windsor Regional Hospital’s monthly board of directors meeting.

The program focuses on attracting registered nurses, registered practical nurses, and nurse practitioners to Ontario’s hospitals, long-term care homes, community care, and other health care agencies.

While the $25,000 bonus might have brought the nurses to Windsor, Riddell said it’s not the only thing keeping them here.

“I think that speaks to a lot of the other work that the organization is doing, too,” she told the board.

“So it’s not just about the money. It’s looking at our employee wellness strategies that we have in place, our safe workplace initiative. It’s a fulsome approach.

“Not only are we attracting people to the workplace but we’re keeping them here with a good and safe working environment.”
