Meghan Markle had to follow ‘strict rules’ on Suits after Prince Harry engagement

Meghan Markle, who played Rachel Zane in the hit legal drama Suits before her romance with Prince Harry became public, had to follow ‘strict rules’ set by Buckingham Palace on the show’s set. These rules even influenced changes in the script of the show.

When Meghan and Harry’s relationship started making headlines, the Palace and court officials reportedly came up with several rules that dictated what could be included in the show’s script.

Tom Bower’s book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, offers a peek into the couple’s private life. The information in the book is said to have been gathered from conversations with 80 individuals who knew Harry and Meghan personally.

Meghan starred as Rachel Zane in the legal drama

In his book, Bower reveals: “Fearing the worst, from bitter experience, the Palace stepped in to control Meghan’s life. Aaron Korsh was told to submit all future Suits scripts to Nick Collins, Meghan’s agent.”

He adds: “Scripts were thereafter forwarded to Kensington Palace for approval. Orders for changes of words were sent back from London to Los Angeles,” reports the Express.

The most significant rule allegedly applied to Meghan’s final scene at her ‘wedding’ to Mike on the show. The Palace insisted that no photographs should be taken of Meghan wearing a wedding dress, and she was required to wear a jacket over the dress when not filming.

The Palace looked at Meghan’s Suits scripts to approve them

The Suits scriptwriters took creative liberties with Zane’s final words as before she said: “Tongue-in-cheek, the Suits scriptwriters took a licence with Zane’s final words before she says, ‘I do.'”

This reportedly drastically transformed the atmosphere around the studio.

Even though Suits finished in 2019, it set a new record on Netflix last year. People watched it for a whopping 57.7 billion minutes!

Because it was so popular, the BBC decided to buy the rights to the whole show.

In 2023, Suits creator Aaron said that the Palace gave their thoughts on parts of the scripts about Meghan. However, he noted that their input was minimal.

Meghan was very successful on Suits

“Not many things, by the way, but a few things that we wanted to do and couldn’t do, and it was a little irritating,” he shared, citing an example where the Palace enforced a line change to prevent Meghan from saying “poppycock” on screen.

“The Royal Family did not want her saying the word,” he explained.

“They didn’t want to put the word poppycock in her mouth. I presume because they didn’t want people cutting things together of her saying cock.”

So, the writers used “b******t” instead.

But, the Telegraph said that these ideas came from Meghan’s agent, not the Palace.
