This project will investigate the technologies and methods required for flexible and adaptable autonomous assembly and disassembly processes utilizing robotic manipulators with humanoid hands and a vision system to achieve human-like performance for uncertain shapes, sizes, conditions, and awkward-shaped objects.

Project Description:

Assembly and disassembly of unpredictable shapes, sizes, conditions, and awkward-shaped things presents a significant issue in production when automated and robotic processes are addressed. This is because the manipulators must have a high level of proper recognition, dexterity, flexibility, and manoeuvrability. In most cases, it results in manual and lengthy processes with little or no robotics support for human operators. However, this raises the expense of product repair, end-of-life decommissioning, and disassembly to replace parts.

The project objectives can be summarized as follows:

Conducting a fundamental study on human assembly and disassembly dexterity of awkwardly shaped things with both arms and hands. Using the knowledge gained from completing Objective 1, design, test, learn, and adjust techniques for a typical assembly and disassembly activity.

Using UR3E/UR5E robots and DLR-HIT II Robot Hands from the robotics lab, provide the infrastructure required to implement the strategies outlined in prior goal 2 for difficult assembly and disassembly activities.

Eligibility

Candidates must typically have an undergraduate degree at 2.1 level (or non-UK equivalent as specified by Swansea University) in Engineering or a related science area.

English Language Requirements: If available, IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 5.5 in each individual component) or a Swansea recognized equivalent.

This scholarship is offered to candidates of all nationalities.

ATAS

Please be aware that the programme needs some applicants to have ATAS clearance; more information on ATAS scheme eligibility can be found on the UK Government website.

ATAS clearance is not required as part of the scholarship application process; nevertheless, successful award winners (where appropriate) are provided with information on how to apply for ATAS clearance in conjunction with the scholarship course offer.

Funding Notes

This scholarship pays all tuition fees and provides an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £17,668 for 2022/23).
Additional research expenditures will be offered.
